What does mint authority revoked mean?

On Solana, every token has two switches that decide who can create new tokens and who can freeze yours. "Revoked" means those switches are gone for good. Here's why that matters and how to check it.

Mint authority, in plain English

A Solana token's mint account has a field called mint authority. Whoever holds it can create new tokens out of thin air, any amount, any time. If a creator keeps mint authority, they can print a billion new tokens, sell them into the pool and crash the price to zero. Your share of the supply shrinks with every token they print.

Revoking mint authority sets that field to nobody. After that, nobody can ever create more tokens. The supply you see is the supply forever. It's a one-way door: it can't be undone.

Freeze authority, the other switch

The same mint account has a freeze authority. Whoever holds it can freeze any holder's token account, which means that wallet can't send or sell the token. A creator who keeps freeze authority can let you buy, then freeze you before you sell. That's the Solana version of a honeypot.

Some regulated tokens like stablecoins keep freeze authority on purpose, so issuers can comply with law enforcement. For a meme coin, there's no good reason to keep it.

Why meme coins revoke both

Launchpads like pump.fun create tokens with mint and freeze authority already revoked, which is part of why their tokens look clean on these checks. Tokens launched by hand are different: the creator has to revoke them deliberately. If they didn't, ask why.

  • Mint active: the creator can dilute you to zero.
  • Freeze active: the creator can lock you in.
  • Both revoked: those two specific risks are gone. Other risks aren't.

What revoked does NOT protect you from

  • The creator or insiders can still hold a big share of the supply and dump it.
  • Liquidity can still be pulled if it isn't locked or burned (see what LP locked or burned means).
  • Metadata can still be changed if it's mutable, so the name, symbol or image could be swapped.
  • The project can still just be abandoned.

Revoked authorities are a minimum, not a guarantee.

How The Interrogator checks it

For any Solana token, The Interrogator reads the mint account straight from a public Solana RPC node and checks both fields. In the Developer round, an active mint authority adds 3 points and an active freeze authority adds 3 points. Mutable metadata adds 1, and a creator holding more than 5% adds 1. Each flag links to the token on Solscan so you can confirm it.

It also checks RugCheck for insider networks and LP lock status, and DexScreener for trading. If a source fails, the case says so and adds zero.

Mint authority FAQ

Can a revoked authority be turned back on? No. Once mint or freeze authority is set to nobody, the Solana token program has no way to restore it. That's what makes revoking meaningful.

Why does USDC still have authorities? Stablecoin issuers mint new coins when dollars come in and burn them when dollars go out, and they freeze stolen funds when asked by law enforcement. That's expected for a regulated stablecoin and a big red flag for a meme coin.

What about EVM tokens? The equivalent is whether the contract is mintable and whether ownership has been renounced. The Interrogator reads those from GoPlus.

How to check it yourself

  1. Find the token's mint address (the contract address).
  2. Open it on an explorer like Solscan.
  3. Look for Mint Authority and Freeze Authority in the token overview. Empty or "none" means revoked.
  4. Or paste the address into The Interrogator and read the Developer round.
